UV or ultraviolet light has been used for quite a while to sterilize water and other materials in hospitals, laboratories, homes, businesses. And many air purifier manufacturers have added UV light to their air purifiers as an extra germicidal and musty odor destroying measure. The problem is that even if you have several air purifiers running, even air purifiers with UV light, the air still has to get to the air purifier to be cleaned, and many times you breathe the unpurified air before it can be cleaned.
This is why, even though you may have an air purifier or two running, they don't completely stop the sneezing, coughing, waking up with a stuffy nose, sinus infections, or that smell that you can't seem to get rid of. The ducts in your home / office are very likely still loaded with live mold spores, live bacteria, dust mites, pet hair / dander, and more-these pollutants cause the odors that you smell. And when the A-C /air conditioning or HVAC system turns on, it blows all of this into the air. And yes, it still blows mold / bacteria into the air even if you have a good filter / filtration system attached to your furnace / air conditioner-because the duct work that is after the filter is still loaded with all of these live pollutants-the filter only stops the pollutants in the HVAC duct work BEFORE the filter.
So what's the solution? Buy an in-duct uv light air cleaning system that mounts directly inside the ducts of your HVAC / furnace, or air conditioning system. Why? UV light systems mounted in the HVAC/air conditioning duct work are highly germicidal ( kill over 99% of all bacteria, mold, viruses, etc), so that if any of the pollutants do get out into your air, at least it won't be alive and able to cause health problems for you. Installing a UV light air purifier system can even reduce or eliminate the immediate need for a costly duct cleaning job, which by the way, is only really necessary for the duct work that comes after the filters (less costly than a complete duct cleaning job). And, installing an in-duct UV light air cleaning system costs much less than 3-4 air purifiers, sometimes even less than the cost of one air purifier, and it destroys mold / mildew / musty smells and bacteria in all of the air in your home, not just one room. Add an allergy rated filter to your HVAC systems (1500 rating or higher, at Walmart for about $20 and you're well on your way to cleaner indoor air.
Some key points to keep in mind when buying an in-duct UV light air cleaning system are 1) make SURE the bulbs are at least 36 watts-this is the wattage that was found effective in lab tests; anything less is going to leave certain germs / mold species alive and it's a waste of time, 2) make sure the mounts are made of non-metal material (such as ABS plastic)-this prevents rust / corrosion in your air ducts, which can further contaminate your air, and 3) if you can, get a double bulb system-most single bulb systems, even at 36 watts, only provide 24k light units, which is enough to kill most everything, but there are certain bacteria and mold species that require up to and over 30k units to kill them; a double bulb system would give you 2 x 24k or 48k UV light units, which is more than enough.
To help you consistently breathe, cleaner, healthier air in your home, I highly recommend getting a UV Light Air Purification System designed for easy, DIY mounting inside your HVAC / furnace / a-c/air conditioning ducts.
