We already brought to you the benefits of LED lighting for food processing plants. However, once the food leaves the facility, it doesn’t mean our considerations for hygiene, general safety and energy efficiency leave with it. Once the food is made, storage solutions bring up their own lighting issues we need to consider. Fortunately, OEO lighting has the key to these food storage solutions and more.
What kind of food are you storing?
First, if you are considering upgrading your lighting system to leds, then identifying the right product means understanding your lighting needs. By answering the type of food you are storing, you will be able to help you find the right accessories.
Unlike many non-food products that can withstand a variety of temperatures, perishable foods have very specific safety features. This is because when cold food exceeds a certain temperature, bacteria begin to form and replicate. Severe bacterial strains, such as e. coli and different strains of clostridium, can cause diseases such as botulism.
How does lighting affect temperature?
Lighting of any kind requires energy to power them. In most forms of lighting systems, electricity from the grid enters the bulb to power it. However, not all of this energy is released as light. Some of these are released as other types of energy, such as heat. How much heat depends on the type of bulb.
High-intensity discharge bulbs are notorious for the energy they waste as heat output. Compact fluorescents have emerged and proved more efficient, but even they are not comparable in LED lighting. Since our leds are 80 percent more efficient than HID bulbs, they not only provide a smaller percentage of heat, but they also require a small amount of energy.
When you have indoor refrigeration or frozen food storage, your refrigeration equipment will use a lot of energy to keep the temperature low. By adding significantly less heat, LED bulbs do not increase the pressure on the cooling system and are generally more cost-effective.
You may also need to keep fresh foods at different temperatures, and LED bulbs provide more control. You can preset your requirements and ensure good ambient temperature. Food is generally not stored at high temperatures unless purchased or distributed (e.g. in a restaurant or supermarket). If so, the durability of LED lamps will be able to withstand it, and their energy efficiency will still save you money in the long run.
Other food safety issues
Food types have other safety considerations, and LED lighting can help. If there is a lot of wet food, the solid shell of LED lighting and the lack of bursts will help ensure that there are no nasty surprises when the food ends up on the table.
Although food is a consumer product, its distribution can lead to air pollution problems. If you have large particle stores, then you may have debris entering the storage space. This can get inside the lamp and damage other bulbs. With LED lighting, their compact nature means they last longer, and their durability means they don't shorten as easily as other bulbs.
