Why High Intensity Discharge Bulbs Can’t Compete with LED

While this article makes the case for the benefits of LED lighting over high intensity discharge (HID) lamps, the truth is that they do compete. HIDs have many benefits over incandescent and florescent lights and have served many great purposes in various industries. The issue now is that they are no longer the best on the market and here OEO explains why.

The working principle of high intensity discharge bulb

The discharge aspect of HID lamps is that they provide light when an electric current is sent in an arc through the bulb. This light is intensified by the structure of the bulb. Inside the glass case is an "arc tube" that contains the discharge, so it does not escape. The bulb contains inert gas and can be used for initial discharge.

But the intensity doesn't happen immediately. Instead, heat from the arc heats various metallic substances, which vaporize inside the bulb and cause the intensity of the light to increase. They are used for a variety of purposes, such as HID metal halide bulbs, which use metal halides (metal halide compounds) as light intensifiers, and mercury for gases.

Why use high intensity discharge bulbs

As we mentioned earlier, these bulbs are more efficient than fluorescent bulbs and incandescent bulbs. This makes them a good option with little price difference. However, the main reason for using them so far is their strength. They can produce a lot of light without losing much infrared energy. The human eye does not see infrared light, which makes it less useful for most industrial USES.

This means that these bulbs do a good job of illuminating large industrial Spaces. The quality is good, which means it can be used in many industries that need a good light source.

Why did LED lighting improve this high intensity discharge lamp

Although HID are excellent in many respects, they have their drawbacks. Many of these have been improved by LED technology. They include:

Safety: although HID is made of different types of glass, many of which are reinforced, they are not suitable for all environments. Problems may arise in steel plants and areas with high amounts of heat and/or objects that may cause damage. Since it contains metals and gases, this not only means losing the bulb, but also means it can cause pollution problems in sensitive environments. LED lighting is a solid state lighting device that is almost impossible to break. They use epoxies instead of gases, so that's not a problem.
Reduce light loss: while HID bulbs lose less infrared light than some bulbs, they don't compete with leds.
Waste less energy: HID is far less energy efficient and loses a lot of energy through heat. This is bad for the refrigeration industry or for other industries that require careful temperature control. LED lighting loses very little heat.
Lumen depreciation: HID loses lumens when gas and metals are slowly depleted. This means that they may be on, but unlike LED lighting, their intended use is less bright and often ineffective.
Time: HID takes time to warm up and produce the light you need. LED lighting is almost instantaneous and can be used for motion sensors and other programmable lighting requirements even in large industrial Spaces.
Light direction: HID cannot control the light direction and LED. Because of their light in the 360 ° area, where you don't need the lost.

These reasons combine to make LED lighting more energy efficient, cost effective and of better quality than high-intensity discharge lamps. With the initial cost of leds continuing to fall, and the incentive to make changes to leds, there are no better questions.
