You may have heard all about LED, or light-emitting diodes, and how they help you in your efforts at green living. But what exactly is "green living" and how does that benefit you? Moreover, what are the advantages of using LED light bulbs and what does "green" have to do with it?
Green living is living life in such a way that you consciously reduce your use of the Earth's resources and of your own resources as well. It touches on energy consumption, diet and transportation. So it is not only trying to cut down your bills and working within budget, but also caring for the Earth. In either case, you win. You not only save money, you get to lessen United Kingdom's dependency on fossil fuel and nuclear power, thereby saving Mother Earth, too.
How will using LED lights help you practice green living?
LED lights are more efficient. Fluorescent lamps give out light in all directions. LED bulbs, on the other hand, emits light in a specific direction, making it more efficient because no energy is wasted in light that isn't used or needed. While a traditional light bulb wastes energy as heat, a LED bulb is much cooler.
LED lights last longer and are more durable. White it being used nowadays can last for 100,000 hours or about 11 years of continuous use. This means that even if you leave it on for the whole day, every day of the week, every week of the month, every month of the year, it will take you 11 years before it burns out. What does this mean? You will spend less in terms of replacing your bulbs. Can you imagine not having to replace LED lights for 11 years? In those 11 years, you would have needed to replace at least 20 incandescent bulbs! So imagine the savings you get from not having to buy a replacement bulb every so often. What's more, LED bulbs do not have glass components, so it is not easy to break like the conventional ones.
LED lights help you cut on your electricity bill. Another savings you can gain from using it comes from your power bill. This light uses only about a third of electricity needed to power incandescent bulbs.
True, LED bulbs might be more expensive, but if you factor in the savings, you will see that they essentially cost less. And with all of these savings, it is a wonder why people are not converting to LED fast enough.
Additionally, LED lights are much smaller than conventional light bulbs. As such, you could use it for those smaller nooks and crannies all over the house that you want lit.
And because it uses less power, LED lights are great if you are using solar panels, a growing trend here in the UK.
Along with all the benefits they bring and all the cost-efficiency, you also get to help the environment. Not only do they conserve energy, but they help minimize harmful waste. Regular lights put nuclear waste, carbon dioxide, and sulfur oxide into our atmosphere and our landfills. Low-energy LEDs, on the other hand, keep tons of CO2 out of the atmosphere throughout their life cycle and they keep nuclear waste and sulfur oxide to a minimum in the environment.
