Is Bigger Really Better When It Comes To Buying Table Lamps?

If you were to walk around your home taking note of the different light fixtures, it is likely that you will come across at least one table lamp, even if it is shoved in a corner of that formal living room that no one uses anymore. The uses of these sorts of fixtures are boundless, but many homeowners make the mistake of purchasing lamps that are far too big for the space. This poses the question of whether bigger really is better.
Size really does matter when it comes to buying a table lamp for use in your home. A lamp that is quite large, for example, is going to look very out of place in a tiny study nook and one that is quite small is going to be dwarfed by the other pieces in the room when fitting out a large lounge. On top of this, there are a number of other factors that should help to define your choice, the most important of which being the table you wish to place the lamp on.
When making your choice, the height of the fixture should be one of your primary considerations. It can be quite simple to work out an appropriate height for your table lamp by looking at the surface it will sit on. When working with side tables, for example (such as those seen either side of a bed or couch), you should ensure that the fixture does not exceed three feet in height. Even when working with larger tables, it is recommended that you do not purchase a lamp that is taller than four feet to ensure that it does not become a distraction.
Whilst some people think that the appropriate height of a table lamp is subject to our own personal tastes, this really is a misconception. Common sense and current design trends really do dictate the best height for a lamp and, really, the only factors of personal taste that come into play are our choices in colour, shape and material. It is important that you choose a fixture that not only suits the size of the space but one that also complements the existing design.
If you do not believe us when we say that size really does matter when it comes to buying a table lamp, then our only advice is to buy whatever lamp you want and place it in your desired location. You will soon realize that a fixture that is too small or too large sticks out like a sore thumb and you will have to find somewhere else to place it.
