Tips For Installing Your Brand New Chandelier

Oct 25 2019

When someone mentions the word 'chandelier' what sort of thoughts immediately spring to mind? Rich and luxurious mansions that are host to all manner of parties and get togethers? Stunning theatres that still retain the imprint of a time no longer ours? The good news for lovers of elegance and classical design everywhere is that chandeliers are no longer set aside for these sorts of buildings - more and more often, they are being installed in the home.
As buying a chandelier is quite a big investment, you will want to make sure that you do everything right, from your initial choice all the way down to the installation. This will ensure that your fixture is the most attractive in your home and that it meets your requirements perfectly. Whilst much emphasis is placed on the purchase of the chandelier, you can use the following tips to ensure that you get the installation right:

Double check the weight of the chandelier you have chosen. If it is very close to the weight of the lighting fixture currently hanging in the room, you will not need to replace the ceiling junction box. If it is heavier than the existing fixture, however, you will need to invest in a junction box that will be able to support its weight.
Disconnect the power running to the existing lighting fixture at the circuit box. Use a circuit tester to make sure that the electricity supply has been switched off; you don't want to risk electrocuting yourself, after all.
Remove the old light fixture. Whilst doing this, you should make note of how it was installed. Use electrical tape to mark the wires and where they were connected.
Attach the hardware for your brand new chandelier to the mounting strap in the ceiling. If your old fixture didn't use a mounting strap, you should buy one and screw it into the junction box.
Twist the wires from the chandelier to the wires attached to the ceiling, then turn the wire on the nuts in a clockwise direction. This will ensure that the fixture is properly secured.
If you are installing the chandelier over a dining or kitchen table, you will need to make sure that it hangs at least 30 inches above the surface to ensure adequate head clearance.

Whilst following all of the above tips should put you in a reasonably good position to install your brand new chandelier by yourself, it is of the utmost importance that you follow the instructions provided in the manufacturers booklet supplied with the fixture. This will ensure that your installation is performed correctly and that your chandelier remains secured to the ceiling for many years to come.
