When And Where It Is Appropriate To Use Wall Lights In Your Home

Jun 27 2019

Many homeowners fall in love with wall lights the moment they lay eyes on them - the lights are available in a wide range of styles and sizes, making them perfectly suited to almost any home. When choosing wall sconces for use in your home, however, it is important to keep in mind that they aren't always appropriate for the use or location that you have in mind. This article aims at outlining when and where their appropriate use is.
There are a number of appropriate uses for wall lights in our homes, but it is important to make sure that you meet the following criteria to ensure that you won't regret your decision down the track:
Hallways: Wall sconces work fantastically in hallways, as they can provide illumination every few steps. The glow produced by these fixtures can also be quite soft, especially when coupled with a dimmer switch, making them perfectly suited for leaving on overnight for little ones to see their way.
Stairwells: Like hallways, stairwells can also benefit quite well from the inclusion of some wall lights. They have the added benefit of improving safety in the space, as you will be able to easily see the edge of each step as you walk up or down. You should avoid using fixtures that are angled upwards, however, as this can cause glare for people walking down.
Accent: Due to the direct illumination provided by these sconces, they are perfect for accenting architectural or artistic elements of your home. You could install one above an expensive painting or in a small alcove to show off the decorative nature of the space. Remember, these sconces are not designed to throw light very far.
Outdoors: Installing some wall lights outside can really do wonders for the aesthetic appeal of your home. Use them to show off areas of your landscaping, such as a fountain, climbing trellis or swimming pool. You can also use them as safety or security lighting by installing them either side of the front door.
Small: If some rooms in your home are overly small or can feel quite enclosed once they're full of furniture, you may find that some wall sconces are the perfect solution instead of table or floor lamps. Mount them either side of a bed as reading lights, install them in a separate toilet, or illuminate a small laundry.
As you can see, there are a number of locations and applications that make the installation of wall lights suitable but, unfortunately, many homeowners are still getting these things wrong. When choosing lighting for your home, ask yourself whether the space you are illuminating is small or narrow, whether safety or security could be improved, and whether you need a subtle glow.
