Can LED Lighting Benefit Chemical Treatment Plants?

There are many considerations operators of chemical treatment plants need to make. Safety is not the least of them, but all the disparate elements need to come together for effective production and maintenance. While careful regulations and protocol have been instated for as long as feasible, this doesn’t mean new innovations can’t be included. Might such innovations include the benefits of LED lighting?

General benefits of LED lighting

Before we look at how LED lighting can be particularly beneficial to the chemical processing industry, we should look at some of the reasons why companies are updating LED lighting for all commercial USES.

First, LED lighting is more energy efficient than high-intensity discharge predecessors. HID lamps such as high pressure sodium or metal halide lamps have good light quality, but they have a cost. The energy required to create an arc between the electrodes is so high that it needs to be controlled by a ballast so that the bulb does not emit enough energy. This energy continues to surge between the electrodes until the bulb reaches the strength it needs.

Because HID (metal halides, for example) burn the gases contained in glass, as well as the metals and halogen compounds that are their names, much of the electricity will not dissipate as light, but as waste heat. LED lighting does not have the same problem and USES very little energy in a more efficient way.

This efficiency leads to greater cost-effectiveness. Less energy put into the bulb means fewer Numbers appear on the invoice. As production increases, lower initial costs and more plug-and-play bulbs mean less installation costs, and the longer upgrades are delayed, the more money is wasted.

There are other benefits to cutting calories

Chemical treatment plants are extremely controlled environments. The ambient temperature required for chemical processing needs to be accurate, otherwise it may affect the process or even have a serious reaction with the chemical. This temperature can be maintained more easily using LED lights. The lack of wasted heat means you can more easily control the ambient temperature, and constant energy use means you don't have to readjust.

LED lighting fixtures are very sturdy

Although heat is a problem, it is not the only heat in chemical treatment plants. Toxic gases and pollutants are a real concern. For HID, fluorescent and other lighting systems, special enclosure and fixtures are required. It costs money, and it doesn't always work. It also negatively affects the quality of light.

Part of the specific problem (whether water treatment or other chemical processes) is the reaction of any chemical to its environment. Lamps with metal components may not be able to withstand contaminants in corrosive or high humidity environments. LED lighting wraps its components in nonmetallic fixtures that don't react like other bulbs. It does this without affecting the quality of the light output.

With LED lighting, lamps can work in the most extreme conditions. They do not require the spherical space required by the HID, and the fixtures themselves are compact. Many lamps are naturally waterproof, making them more easily waterproof. This is partly because there is no need to release HID heat. All of these and the light they emit can be customized to the specific needs of the factory.

Chemical treatment plants require a carefully controlled environment. With availability, temperature control, robustness and quality, LED lighting means it is easier to maintain the delicate balance of these industrial Spaces. Not to mention saving energy and saving energy.
